Here's my favorite spiritual quote about what the universe "is"...
"The whole universe is a gradual, systematic and progressive process of the Self-realization of the Absolute. This is one view. The whole universe is a dreamy and illusory misrepresentation of the indivisible Homogeneous Absolute. This is another view. The former view leads to the more advanced latter view. The former is an intellectual judgment, the latter is the intuitional experience. The first view is beginning of knowledge, the second one is the end of wisdom." - Swami Sivananda

How about this one?
"Whatever can happen will happen, did happen, and is happening simultaneously."

I don't know what I know, but I do know that what I know isn't sufficient enough and that what i don't know will always be greater than that which i know. Simply put, the universe is wide and vast, it's been here for as long as we can remember. Why would we wish to even know the origins? Curious minds, perhaps? The point is that even if we did know exactly how it formed and when, that's all it would be. We wouldn't be able to do anything with it. We would just be able to say "Hah! I've found the fingerprint of existance!" Nothing more, nothing less.
