Having looked through all these images, I feel I ought to point some things out about digital images.

The main thing is that a digital image can't be magnified. You can, on your PC, zoom in until you have 1 image pixel=1 monitor pixel, and you can make it easier on your eyes to make it larger, but you cannot see any more detail, because there is no more detail to see. Using a magnifying glass on a monitor screen is a waste of time; all you are doing is looking at larger pixels; again, you will see no more detail.

It's very easy to forget this since it isn't the way the Real World works; I'm an artist, I stare at a monitor all day, and yet still find myself leaning closer to see more detail in waht I am drawing even though I know logically that this is pointless; it's a reflex.

Additionally, bear in mind that pixels are rectangular, so if you magnify one digitally you will see rectangular structures; added to this is the fact that the jpeg compression system works on blocks of image and produces rectangular artifacts as a result; these artifacts will be enhanced by image processing.

I hope this posting doesn't appear rude. I'm just trying to say one shouldn't assume that what one sees in a digital image is necessarily there, especially if it is at the limits of visibility.

"Maybe we are or were (or more properly, perhaps, some distant cousins)."

Had A thought about it for some time now. What if there WAS a race living on Mars, perhaps even and technological advanced such. They foresaw their own doom trough something similar to T Van Flanderns theory and therefore decided to leave the planet. they builded a giant space**** and took off. The new sour enviroment left after the destruction quickly turned all metals to rust (which is kinda red/brown colored).

Now, All this is just made up by me but I still think it´s a cool thought.
Also, Guess what nearby planet those marsians shoose to start a new life on. ;)

"Does random, environmental entropy on Mars create such realistic images? Personally, I find a human-like presence -- at some time -- a more plausible explanation."

Ever done that test where you get to take a look at a paper with black ink spread randomly and tell what the first thing you see is ?, I for example tried turning it upside down and saw a planet with a giant scar trough it, I´ve been reading about this too much.. time to go to bed.

Quote: Dr. Ed Weiler. If we get a gust of wind that exceeds the limits [on descent in January], we can lose the lander...

I'm trying to visualise an experiment:
(1) A 4 metre cubed vacuum chamber, with 1% atmosphere present.
(2) 33% or so Earth gravity (wishful thinking).
(3) A high powered electric fan within the chamber.
(4) 4 Tins of baked beans, suspended from the ceiling on 1.85 metres of string, also within the chamber.

When the fan is switched on and run at variable speeds, what will be observed?
What velocity would be required to shift 1% Earth atmosphere so that it would be capable of disturbing those tins in a near vacuum situation?

In addition, it has been documented by Nasa that clouds have been witnessed at an altitude of 90,000 feet on Mars.

It just doesn't make any sense.

Hello
As you can see I am new to this board, and from the looks of things I am going to find this forum very interesting. I am a member of several other similar boards but none seem as dedicated to the subject as this.
I have a great deal of interest in Mars and am paying close attention to the images coming back from Rover Spirit. Please visit my website to get an understanding of who I am.
Firstly: I would like to present an image that has been causing a bit of a stir...Not least at badastronomy.com. I have claimed it has been (doctored) in some way and would be interested if anybody could shed some professional 'light' on this.

I am restricted by the size of the image I can upload to my public album but can post the link to the full size image if required.

Why would any sane person risk losing JPL's billion-dollars-per-year budget and criminal charges for destruction of government property? JPL's behavior up to now has been far from exemplary or even science-motivated. But I've seen no hint of criminal activity yet.

So what leads you to suspect otherwise? -|Tom|-
