I hope you get an answer to your probing question-I asked a similar question about the Jupiter probe and never get an answer. Have you asked JPL? Don't be cocky just ask the question.

Thanks for your comment. No I have not contacted JPL as I'm not too confident on who to speak with there. Take a look at this short video with Steve Squires (top man at JPL) and as you will see, his computer monitors tell a story of a nitrogen rich atmosphere. The area is Victoria crater. Looks to me like there is serious atmosphere on the surface!

I can't download your link but, your guy at JPL looks like a start.

I'll give it a try and will post the response. The link btw is not a d/l. Should just click onto a video in my Google public "DIVE" folder. Please let me know if you can't access this. I have use it on another computer and seems to be no problem. Big thanks.

Oh btw, I said in my original post "or about 5lbs per square foot". Of course, should have said "per sq inch" More coffee me need!

There is plenty of atmosphere on Mars for some things, but breathing is not one of them. Unbreathable is not the same as nonexistent. Go much above 12,000 feet here on Earth and the atmosphere becomes unbreathable as well, but that doesn't make it nonexistent either.
