Mysterious Lines in Noctis Labyrinthus

Joe,
I'm pretty sure (almost positive) that these are marks made by boulders rolling down the slope toward the pit (dark spot on right of center). You can even trace some from rock piles toward the left of the image to a single boulder somewhere on the slope where the line stops. They are straight because they are rolling downhill on a (more or less) flat inclined plane. The slope of the pit is like the wall of a big funnel so they don't all go in the same exact direction but they all go "down." [Neil]

Neil,Trinket,

Thank you for your replies.

I think that power except the gravity acts on a stone when I guess from length and the direction of the track.

I agree that judging from the length and direction of the tracks, the stones are rolling downhill, probably after being dislodged by erosion or a windstorm, and after that the force of gravity takes over. As your images indicate, many of the stones roll halfway down the slope and then stop. Good images. [Neil]

Hi Trinket,

Here are two images of "end of line" boulders, one of the trail marks of boulders rolling downhill, and one of a boulder source at the top of the pit. [Neil]
